#1241 HostiliX with OS/2(R) and DOS(R) SubSystems.(?)

Has anyone heard of this group?
They say they will support OS/2 (subsystem)
in their os (based on ReactOS).
"
Hi.

I am writing to you in the name of all BetaComp Team members, because
we're thinking, that you are the best from the best. We make new
operating system firstly based on ReactOS <http://www.reactos.com
<http://www.reactos.com/>> (the part of you work on ReactOS or did it in
the past). Why base on ReactOS? The answer is very simple. HostiliX
(this is a name of our OS) is compatible with Windows(R) and ReactOS is
compatible with Microsoft(C) product too, so we based HostiliX on
ReactOS, because we don't want to waste our time to do something what is
already done. Now suggest next question: Why are we doing Windows(R)
clone? We are not making a Windows clone! Just most hardware
manufacturers do drivers only for Windows(R), so we want to HostiliX be
able to use it. We don't have time to do drivers! The same situation is
with Windows applications. Most users need Windows(R) software. We want
to permit them to use free operating system and them's favourite
software. But running Windows software isn't our priority!
We want to make new, fast, stable and secure operating system. It will
have its' own SubSystem using CygWin, or CygWin clone, so it will run
modified Linux applications. POSIX SubSystem must be modified of course.
There won't be root directory (/). All ported from Linux to HostiliX
software will use drive letters like A:, C:, (...). The will be also
OS/2(R) and DOS(R) SubSystems.

FAQ:

Q: How want we to do drive letters in ported from Linux software?
A: We want to modify libraries like GTK and QT (dialog windows) and add
into it drive litters support. PosiX Layer will modify all slashes to
backslash and if any program want to access / directory PosiX Layer will
translate it to for example C:\HostiliX\System32\Posix where will be
usr, bin, sbin and folders. Directory structure of Posix dir will be
compatible with Unix directory structure. All drive letters will have
shortcuts (will be mounted) somewhere in this directory. Using modified
open/save/etc dialog windows user will feel that he uses any Windows
application.

Q: What's our pririty?
A: Make HostiliX stable fast and secure with all features like logging
in/out, switching user, shutting down system (power off, reboot and
hibernate).

Q: Will be hibernate just a hibernate? :P
A: No! When system call hibernate process it will close all network
connections and then unload drivers to all network hardware. Then will
hibernate computer. After user power on computer again HostiliX will
boot up from hibernation and then loads again unloaded before
hibernation process drivers. What it adds? Let's imagine that you have
Sagem Fast 800 ADSL Modem Connected to USB. When you power off your
computer, driver will load, but modem will be unsynchronised with line.
HostiliX will load this driver again, synchronise modem and connect to
Internet again.

Q: Why don't we help ReactOS Team?
A: There's a few reasons. First: We don't want to do Windows clone.
HostiliX will be only able to load Windows(R) drivers and run Windows(R)
software, when we will do more and repair existing I/O Functions.
Second: Windows software compatibility isn't our priority! Third: We
don't like ReactOS Team policy. They're doing anything like this in
Windows(R). They even cloned Explorer. We only want to compatible with
Windows(R) startup, shutdown (without hibernate), login processes. But
it won't looks like Windows. HostiliX will have its' own GUI (it's GDI +
XOrg with theming support).

If you have any other questions to us, if something isn't clear, please
write to me. I'll reply and answer to all your questions!

Why I write to you? Because we (BetaComp Team) think, that you're the
best from the best. We need more people to write really good OS. If you
have free time and want to make really great Operating System for home
and business please help us! Please reply.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,
Rafal Kupiec
BetaComp Team

#1243 OSFree News; sort of .

It is from a post (copied it) at the forum
at http://www.os2world.com
"
The osFree group have choosen the
kernel for the new OS/2 -- it will be the
L4 microkernel. (See the last news
at the http://www.osfree.org/ website). The
osFree team now has a developer which
has an experience in L4 programming.
It's Samuel A.Falvo. See his page on
OS/3 developing: http://www.falvotech.com/projects/os3.php .
Now Samuel is writing an OS loader as an alternative
for GRUB bootloader, which is traditionally used
for loading L4 with initial servers. Also he's
finished the 'format' utility. The new OS will
use the LEAN filesystem as an example of the
simple but superior to FAT filesystem, other than HPFS.
It's very interesting perspective for OS/2 Community
to get a successor for OS/2, which will support
portability across many processors, SMP support
"out of the box", capability to easy create
distributed clusters, easy drivers reuse from
linux, orthogonal persistense, running many OS
personalities in paralell, fast Inter-process
communication which allow to create systems as
fast as traditional monolithic systems and also
device drivers running in user space which can
be killed and restarted as well as ordinary
user applications! This technology is far
superior (and faster) than Mach microkernel
(on which are based MacOS X, OS/2 PowerPC,
WinNT 3.50 and many others) and considering
that, osFree team decided to no more use
ReactOS as the base for OS/3 system. I
installed ReactOS under VirtualPC and it is
several times slower than WinXP and eats about
64 Mb of RAM. It is monster (as the WinNT is)
and i don't know what perspectives would have
an OS/2 successor based on it

And another question: Opensourcing OS/2 is
good thing. And the hope dies the last. --
Our hope is that IBM will eventually open
the sources, at least partially. I know two
petitions to opensource OS/2, and signed both.
One petition is on this site and is quickly
getting the new voices. But 8000+ voices is
not very much. I can suggest to join voices
with another petition at
http://www.petitiononline.com/OS24FREE/
Another suggestion is to ask help from linuxoids
to get their voices. OS/2 is getting many
software ported from Linux, and linux users
probably wish to get some parts of OS/2
ported to linux. Their thread scheduler
is worse than OS/2's and they don't have
anything like the WPS. KDE and GNOME is
worse. They are already have JFS. You can
say that this is the deal with devil, but
we can get them interested only if they get
their profits. And we will get OS/2 opensourced
instead. And the last suggestion: We can add
the addition to the Petition that if IBM can
not opensource OS/2 (intel) at all, we could
ask IBM to release OS/2 PPC sources as they were
developed solely by IBM and surely have no
Micro$oft code in them. The OS/2 PPC sources
could be ported to L4 as the GNU HURD, which
was ported to L4 from Mach. (And very
successfully, L4 version has good performance
compared with the Mach version)
WBR,
valery
Long live OS/2! Good ideas don't die.

A group for EDM/2. Acts like an

necessary but I thought I would
create it anyway. :)

I did a search at Yahoo Groups but did not find
one there (I used edm as the search words). Is
it located some where else?

Yes, according to this excerpt from a thread on the same subject in the

No, I did not talk to Adrian about it.
It is an un-official group; Like my
OS2-eCS group. Unlike a mailing list,
this group could be used as an archive
of past posts.
