There are there, I just made a little mistake. The right link is:

Jason Filby from ReactOS (will get a fully Win NT compatible OS incl. driver
support) asks
on the FreeOS mailing list, if we would like to program an OS/2 personality on
top of
ReactOS's microkernel.

So there are other choices.

Please read, This msg might be the most important msg for OS/2 in many years.

OK, this project has started.

It has raised a storm and dark secrets have creeped out.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------
Now, what I and many of you want is an opensource OS compatible with OS/2.
(Or better than OS/2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------

So no more talk, lets start working:

I'm now starting the command line tools team. Our goal is to build compatible
versions of the command line tools you find in OS/2 Warp 4.

First, why build them like Warp 4, why not MCP2/ACP2 ? We could but that
would either mean people will have to steal a MCP2/ACP2 licence or drop out
at once. A Warp 4 licence is $15 (?) at ebay, a MCP2 licence is $250 ?
I'm not going to shut out developers from eastern europe or the third world !

The FreeOS project failed since everyone talked and talked about what tools to
use. This project will not !

- The compiler must be Watcom C/C++ 11.0c (OpenWatcom when its relesed)
- The toolkit must be IBM OS/2 Warp toolkit 4.x
- All code MUST be written in plan C (no C++) and assembler may only be used
if C will not do the trick.
- The code must be able to run a as replacement drop in on Warp4. It must
support the same command line switches.

If you dont understand why I set up these rules just ask.

If you think my rules stink and that VisualAge C++ 4.0 or GCPP should be
used with quickly ported unix code, dont join this project.

========= This is what the project needs (osFree/CMD) ================

1) A list of all (prot mode) command line tools in a Warp 4 distro. and all
their
command line parameters. (docs team)
Who wants to do it ?

2) A website that handles this effort. os2world.com has offered to host the site
but we need a webmaster (web team)
Who wants to do it ?

3) A working build environment that everyone can share. I have a CVS server
on my home machine that we can use to share the code.
Who can build the environment (using wmake/shared header files etc.)

4) How can help me set up a good CVS setup ?

5) Someone responsible for coding each tool (I take to to begin with).
ANSI.EXE - John Martin Alfredsson
ATTRIB.EXE - John Martin Alfredsson

BLDLEVEL.EXE

I cannot stop you from peeking into the "leaked" IBM source, and I dont really
know
if I care. But the source that you put on the CVS will be released as GNU (or
possibly
LesserGNU) so it must be correct ! (If its not you are the guilty part.)

Now, sign up and do some thing or continue to watch IBM OS/2 wither away.

My message was only to point out that the files where unconditionally
removed from anywhere, and that there was no mention of *who* wanted
them removed.

I don't need to download now, since I downloaded them as soon as they
appeared on hobbes.

Thankyou, BTW, for your help. It'll be of some help to others.

Bye

Hmmm.

Here we have a five MB source code with a kernel built to be compatible with
WIndows NT.
(Somewhere else someone said that the Windows NT source was leaked...)

The binary distro has no readme file. The website has no indication on where the
sources
came from.

You have to download the sources to find out its a Linux rip. I'm not saying
that would be
in any way wrong (its not) but not stating this clearly on the website is a bit
suspect.

I had to dig into the sources to find:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Source and inspiration from

WINE (http://www.winehq.com)
WinFree (http://www.stack.nl/~onno/win32/)
Linux (http://www.kernel.org)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
That does not look like a good giving credits where credits are due !

Now I'm not going to be negative, if ReactOS is any good I recomend people who
knows about kernels and drivers to take a good look and tell us what they find
out.

Sure there are LOTS of alternatives, you can probably find more than 10
opensource kernels if you look.

Download them, check them out, find out if they would be good.

Dont talk, work !

Sincerely

All well defined.
Only one doubt regarding command line switches: can we add more
switches, or should we stay with _exactly_ the same switches?
Also: is it allowed to change the output for a switch?

These questions come from a real example: I'd like to offer myself as
coder for TREE.EXE (to begin), but the reference implementation is
nearly unusable. It produces an unreadable output, and it's not very
useful either. I think it should be changed to produce a tree-like
output per default (as it is meant to be). What do you think?

You should try to get in contact with authors of OS2CLU03 (OS/2 commandline
utilities) and GNUFUTIL (GNU file
utilities) in order to eventually get source code from them.
These two packages have commandline tools for most things needed, however
naming and commandline syntax is different.
Nevertheless it might be less work to port these than to write from scratch.

Just my 2 cents.

Herwig

What are driver options for ReactOS? Will it be driver-compatible to
NT or something else? (Probably this must be in the ReactOS FAQ).

Kernel of NT clone... There's a lot of irony in it if you know the
full story. However, this must be the closest kernel to OS/2.
