Hi,

By the way is there any fan of asm ?
Mesa3D has some part of software rendering in asm code for MMX, PIII
Бnd some more.
I can't understand in asm more then 2 lines.
So the questuion is - what benefit may be obtained from usind asm, for
example for operations like
for(i=0; i < n ; i++)
for(j=0; j < 4 ; j++)
iD[j] = fA[j]*iS[j] + fB[j] * iD[j];

where iD and iS - is unsigned char, fA and fB - float/fixed point

And if the game is worth candles - then who is able to play it ?

No way to tell. Presumably the hand optimized version is faster than
the compiler generated code. But that may or may not be true depending
on the particular compiler and CPU used.

Is there any modern computers without MMX ?

Noone, but as some people think this is important that probably
the only way to benefit from 3D HW in OS/2.

Who in their right mind would do a 3D game for OS/2 ?
The number of buying customers would be ?

If you think freeware/GPL 3D games a fullscreen layer would
be enough, btw, I remember playing Quake on OS/2 with no
3D hardware support and it was playable. I dont doubt there
are more advanced games but who will want to port them
for free ?

This is getting out of hand a bit.

What use would 3D hardware support be on OS/2 since the
OS is dying quickly. An opensoure OS must start by supporting
the thing the OS already supports but I assume this hard work
is not attracting people since draming about advanced features
are more interesting (not aimed at anyone, I do this myself).
If for say, Serenity to add 3D is all about sales. How would they
even with help from non-payed developers be able to get use
of such a function when there are LOTS of other things they
would like that would help sales MUCH more.

When this group started there was discussion about the TPE distro.

This distro raised lots of questions and it lead to us abandoning any
relationship to it. Since some people said that the OS/2 source was
availible outside of IBM (leaked?) I asked you all to place anything
that could help in the "dropzone" directory of the ftp site.

I have not looked for a long time but when I looked there were a
few suspicious .rar files.

And, yes, after unpacking it was OS/2 source code !

It was far from complete, only contained part of the kernel so I serously
doubt it would be possible to build anything useful from it. But its an
acknowledgement that part of the source is "out there".
Looking at it makes me think that the TPE distro may have used this
as a base and added stuff, lots of stuff. They probably spend lots
and lots of time filling in the holes.

Now, the source are no longer on the ftp site (no use trying to breach
in to get it but I copied it to a CD that sits on my desk.

If asked for it (by the right party) I would destroy the CD so that I dont
have any copy of these files found in "dropzone" or if they want to I
would place the disk in the hands of the police authorities.

However before I do anything like this,
My question is, and I want an answer **only** from an authorized IBM'er
if this code is:

1. Unintentionally leaked or intentionally leaked ?
2. Is IBM going to enforce their rights or do they concider it abandoned ?
3. Would using it (reading it) put and developer in trouble ?
4. If its out there, why not give it to NetLabs ?
5. What to do with the CD ?

Please dont email me saying that "you know its illegal" or "rip it now". I want
answers from the people that claims they own it.
If you want to ventilate your opinions do it on the list !

PS: To the person that did the upload. I do not save any logs accesses
to this directory. You will be and stay anonymous.
The same to anyone else that have things to share that you dont want
to be traced back (for example you may be an ex. IBM employee).
ftp as anonymous to:
jma.dnsalias.com
directory is:
/osfree/dropzone

what's the reason for that statement?

Odin gets a lot of enhancements right now.

Sure about that?

Lately there was a discussion in the Odin users mailing list. Basically,
Sander van Leeuwen told he won't do anymore anything new on Odin. We all do
know Sander is/was about the only one working full free time on Odin, so if he
stops we can be pretty sure the project stops too.

Sander told working for free on Odin hasn't much of sense anymore to him since
VPC became fully functionnal.

And I have to agree with him. For you can't work on one side for free on a
project whereas your employer promotes a costly package having the same goals.
In a different way but still the same goals.

Sander needs his living too, I'm sure we all can agree on that.

Bottom line: if Odin wants to resume, it badly needs someone to take over.

BTW, I have sources and binary for 1.6 version

you mix up something here. He wrote he won't work on Odin in his
sparetime. He didn't write he won't work on Odin at all anymore. I
won't comment that any more because it's not up to me to write what
Sander is doing in his job but I *know* that Odin is still under
development.

For sure it still wouldn't hurt if someone else would work on Odin as
well.

Yes. But only enhancements useful to very specific apps. And
stuff that used to work just keeps breaking (I'm not blaming
Sander or anyone).
