I don't how much help it will provide developers of
eCS software, but IBM
has announced that they are releasing 500 patents for
use in open source software. They will be adding to this number.

One of the patents specifically mentions OS/2:

US6292843 Quick loading of run time dynamic link library for OS/2

Full list can be found here:

http://www.ibm.com/ibm/licensing/patent ... atents.pdf

Anyone want to comment of the potential impact of this
action on eCS apps? Other useful items?

What could this mean to the OSFree project?

Hi,
Thanks for the direct IBM link. I also posted a news release about this
on the AltOpSys group:

-------- Original Message --------
Subject: [AltOpSys] 01/10: IBM offers 500 patents for open-source use

Hi,
A small indication of the further commitment to OSS comes from IBM:

"IBM offers 500 patents for open-source use"
<http://news.com.com/IBM+offers+500+pate ... ?tag=st_lh>

"IBM has decided to let open-source developers use 500 software patents
without fear of an infringement lawsuit, a new step in its encouragement
of the collaborative programming philosophy."

Perhaps in the future IBM will open source/release more
OS/2 related patents.

Thanks for posting it at other groups.

The site might have been down for awhile but it seems to be back up
now (I just checked it and it is back ). You should check it again.

That would be another possibility.
With IBM releasing alot of patents,
I am hoping that OS/2 would be - eventually -
one of them.

Where is the project based out of. I would not mind helping by giving
a small contribution through paypal.

That or through us money order. I know alot of people are running
ecommstation. So im guessing ill go with os 2 warp 3 connect or os 2
warp 4

I dont have a opinion on os 2 since i have never used it.

I was thinking about geos but its seems as though geos 32 will take

forever.

sincerely

Hi everyone,

There's a full page article on ReactOS in the Christmas edition of Linux Format. It states that impressive
progress is being made with new releases every few months. I think it's a pity that the majority of the osFree
group rejected the request to join the ReactOS group to develop an OS/2 personality for it. At least it's a going
project.

I don't remember that a majority or even a vote taken on the
issue of joining ReactOS. That occurred some time ago. It
relates to the relatively slow, however continuous progress
that occurs on it as well as on other open source operating
systems, e.g. Linux, generally.

Writing an OS/2 personality requires considerable more effort
than that of a microkernel. In theory, given the common APIs
for microkernels, we could develop an OS/2 personality
independent of a specific microkernel. It would begin at the
OS/2 API level, working downward to the eventual
microkernel APIs.

The pity does not lie in any unwillingness to join the ReactOS
effort, but in our inability to begin the analysis and design of
an OS/2 personality. Having a working, full featured ReactOS
solves one problem, but a far larger one remains.
