Text Clipping Example

To alleviate the problem of trying to visualize the clipping of one display type while working on another display type, the IRE allows you to register the dialog box font metrics through the Dialog Unit Definition dialog box that can be used in conjunction with the Show display limits button on the toolbar. In the dialog, the display limits can be estimated and displayed for the current dialog box or window you have displayed.

The following table provides different dialog box unit factors for the stated displays and video configuration:

IBM VGA 640 x 480 16 100
IBM XGA - 8514 Monitor 1024 x 768 256 95
IBM XGA - 8515 Monitor 1024 x 768 256 93

Therefore, the images on the IBM XGA and an 8514 monitor would be 95% of those on the IBM VGA system. If an IBM XGA and an 8515 monitor was being used, the images would be 93% of those on the IBM VGA system.

It should be noted that this does not alleviate the testing of the dialog box and window designs on the target displays, because this method is just an approximation. It only allows you to get in a close range of what would be displayed so that you can develop on your system with a higher resolution and be able to distribute preliminary code that displays properly.
