The Resource Conversion Utility converts OS/2-specific resources to Windows-compatible resources and vice versa. This is an applications development tool used in creating cross-platform applications.
Like source files, resource files are compiled with a resource compiler. The resource compiler provided in the IBM C and C++ Compilers package is specific to the development environment. Resources compiled with an OS/2 resource compiler, will enable only OS/2 applications to access resources in the .RC files. Because .RC files are unique to the environment that they have been developed in, resources cannot simply be inherited by similar applications developed under different environments. Therefore, to create the same application and utilize the same resources for a different platform, the format of the resource must be converted to suit the operating environment. The resource conversion utility enables resources to be ported to other platforms without having to re-create the objects for similar applications.
The resource conversion utility can also convert selected types of image files.
Syntax
convrc [-w |-o |-n] [-iincludepath] [-xincludefile] [-h |-?] rcin rcout
where:
| -w | Specifies that the conversion type to be from Windows 3.x format to an OS/2 format. For Windows NT conversion, please see the -n option below. |
| -o | Specifies that the conversion type to be from OS/2 to Windows NT/95 format. If no option is specified, this is the default conversion process. Resource converted using this option cannot be used under any Windows platform that was developed prior to the Windows 95 operating system. |
| -n | Specifies that the conversion type is to be from Windows NT/Windows 95 to OS/2. This option is not the same as the -w option. |
| -iincludepath | Specifies the path location of the file to be converted. Replace includepath with actual path where the resource file is located. |
| -xincludefile | Specifies the include file to be converted. Replace includefile with the name of the include file. |
| -h or -? | Displays Command Line Help |
| rcin | Specifies the name of the resource file to be converted. Resource files are identified by their characteristic .rc extension. The .rc extension must be included when specifying the resource file to be converted. |
| rcout | Specifies the name of the new resource file created after the conversion process. The new resource file will also possess the characteristic .rc extension. |
Example
The following example is the
command line syntax to convert the Windows resource file,
winres.rc, to an OS/2 resource file, osres.rc:
convrc -w winres.rc osres.rc
If the winres.rc file does not reside in the current directory, but can be located by including the path of \DIR1\DIR2\. The command line syntax would be:
convrc -w -i\dir1\dir2\ winres.rc osres.rc
